The two biggest marketplaces are merging!

Amazon's next country in Europe is going to be Ireland, and eBay's story of slow decline...

ZALANDO Buys ABOUT YOU for €1.2 Billion

Marketplace Size:
1️⃣ Zalando GMV: €15 billion
2️⃣ ABOUT YOU GMV: €2 billion

Here is why I think it's happening:

- Zalando + ABOUT YOU to dominate fashion e-com in Europe
- Brands separate but work together behind the scenes to get faster
- ABOUT YOU’s tools (for B2B f.e.) + Zalando’s systems
- They’ll save cash by sharing warehouses, logistics, and payment systems.
- ABOUT YOU lost €112M last year. Zalando’s stepping in to fix it

🇮🇪 Amazon’s Next Country – Ireland 🇮🇪

I think roughly €10B in total online sales right now with 10%–15% growth
(comparison - Amazon.co.uk GMV €35B-€40B per year)

Before Amazon launched Amazon.ie, Irish shoppers mostly used Amazon’s UK site. This made it tough to tell what share of Ireland’s online shopping was actually going to Amazon.

Prior to Amazon.ie analysts have placed Amazon’s influence at around 10–20% of Irish online purchases now.

Ebay slowly dying?

The first real contender to Amazon is no longer a relevant main competitor. eBay remains hugely strong in some niches, but it is no longer "the everything store." What went wrong in the story of the first true marketplace?

Market capitalization comparison

eBay:

  • 1999: $11.4 billion

  • 2024: $30.8 billion

After accounting for inflation, the $11.4 billion market cap eBay had in 1999 would be worth approximately $22.19 billion in 2024 dollars.

Amazon:

  • 1999: $25.7 billion

  • 2024: $2.244 trillion.
